Langenargen / Lake Constance (Match Center Germany / Match Race Germany), May 17, 2017. Whilst the 35th America's Cup commences in Bermuda, the international matchracing elite will be fighting for victory at Match Race Germany, the Grand Prix of Germany. Twelve crews from ten nations are heading for the 20th anniversary over Pentecost on Lake Constance. In Langenargen the duell sailing discipline is celebrated both on the water and on shore: A Whitsun celebration under sails. After the confirmation of three top ten skippers and the announcement of Markus Wieser, who won Match Race Germany sixteen years ago managing to beat Jochen Schümann in the final, there is even more good news: The reigning Matchrace World Champion and favorite of the fans Phil Robertson, who won the most famous German Matchrace Regatta back in 2012, will also show up in the jubilee year. The New Zealander starts as tactician for the Finnish team around helmsman Olli-Pekka Lumijärvi, possibly causing a headache for the other competitors who for sure be highly alerted by the news!"
"Matchracing is unique in the sport of sailing"
One common fact that unites all twelve teams at Match Race Germany, as well as the organizers, fans and partners, is the love and passion for the duel sailing discipline, this very special mix of chess and boxing on the water. „Match racing offers team work, tactical decision making and fast thinking wrapped up in a fast paced duel that is spectator friendly," states the young Swedish skipper Kim Kling, "Matchracing is unique in the sport of sailing!"
Patron Winfried Kretschmann, Prime Minister of the State of Baden-Württemberg, said: "Match Race Germany is now one of the real traditional events in the sports calendar of Baden-Württemberg and promises top class sailing again this year. As Prime Minister, I am delighted that our beautiful Lake Constance region is once again attracting the interest of world-wide public and invites sailing enthusiasts as well as fans and interested people alike. The regatta also stands for the growing importance of the attractiveness of Lake Constance for anyone performing water sports. "
Why the best matchrace skippers and the stars of tomorrow love to keep returning to Lake Constance over Pentecost is pointed out by the Finn Olli-Pekka Lumijärvi: „Match Race Germany is one of THE events in match racing and during the years I have followed the racing from the internet; it is a privilege to be part of the great event.“ For this, he got a strong team on board with his regular crew and World Champion Phil Robertson. The Estonian Matti Sepp also looks forward with pleasure to his premiere: "I raced once on Lake Constance back in 2004 on X-99 and had great fun. So I am happy to be back fore one of most famous match race regattas in world!"
At least half of the skippers and teams competing in Match Race Germany 2017 have a podium spot in their sights. With only three places on the podium there is action guaranteed. ZDF reporter and matchrace commentator Nils Kaben is also looking forward to this special year: "The spectators will simply love the exciting duels!" This assessment is shared by sports director Eberhard Magg:“ Our line up in the jubilee year is very attractive and quite typical for Match Race Germany. The right mix of experienced stars and legends, up-and-coming starlets and ambitious newcomers. They all can´t wait to hear the first starting gun being fired. I am quite sure that we will experience spectacular duels and a few walloping surprises in front of the picture-book scenery of the Montfort Castle and the Swiss-Alps."
The race village, purpose built for Match Race Germany along the Langenargener shores in Langenargen’s famous Gondola Harbor is well prepared for the great anniversary party. The partners of Germany's most famous matchrace regatta have contributed intensively to this. Just like sponsoring partners and equipment supplier Würth. Managing Director Thomas Garz says: "For us, Match Race Germany offers a unique experience for young and old in front of a fantastic backdrop. The whole Würth team is looking forward to be a reliable and strong technical equipment supplier now and in the future. We are wishing well to all crews and visitors. May they have a sunny party and always a handful of water under their keel! "
"Our partners are coming to stay."
This is the second time in a row that Biketec AG., the premium electric bike manufacturer from Switzerland, uses the well-known traditional brand FLYER to be experienced and tested at Match Race Germany. Pascal Arnold, project manager for sponsoring and events, says: "For the 20th anniversary edition of Match Race Germany, we will be on site with numerous test bikes, which can be thoroughly tested by the visitors and spectators. "Biketec AG is a good example of what matchrace event manager Harald Thierer has been experiencing for two decades now:" Our partners are coming to stay. Since the premiere in 1997, the sponsoring family has grown together like a successful sailing crew, with whom the cooperation is not only fun, but also brings the event forward year after year. "
Long-standing partners include the brewery Meckatzer Löwenbräu, which is well-known far beyond Lake Constance. Edmund Nussbaumer says: "The Meckatzer Löwenbräu is a brewery that not only draws from the region, but also wants to give something back to it. That is why we have always been committed to our home region. Match Race Germany is a regional event with an enormous international influence. For us the leading regatta on Lake Constance and beyond. 20 years, this is something to be proud of for the organizers.“ More than two dozen international, national and regional companies are part of the history of the Match Race Germany, which this year will be writing its 20th chapter. The organizers are looking forward to tens of thousands of spectators. An extensive festive programme, with not only infotainment on the water and on land, great band appearances and long party nights all at free admission.
